Internal Communications: What You Need To Know

Internal communications is a strategic management tool and communications practice that is responsible for building a shared vision within businesses and organizations. It often serves the objectives of the organization. Before internal communications, organizations (especially large scale organizations) struggled in building a shared vision from the leadership to the team through a direct reporting system as information sometimes got diluted or did not achieve its desired outcomes.

It is a practice of communications that takes stage in corporate communications. Internal communications professionals are trained to communicate effectively with all internal stakeholders of an organization to achieve the business or organization’s desired outcome. Messaging can be for one or more of the following purposes:

  • Information: This could be to amplify the need for culture change within the organization 
  • Inspiration: The message should inspire people to think and feel in the desired way
  • Action: This message should carry very specific actions expected of the people involved with timelines on when to deliver 

It is also very important to apply a strategic approach to internal communications to ensure that activities/behaviours are monitored and the impact of the communications is measured.
